The Stella-Vees Blues Band plays Chicago and West Coast style blues reflecting influences of legendary blues musicians like T-Bone Walker, Hollywood Fats, Magic Sam and Little Walter. Formed in 2001 with four musicians who hosted the Lexington (KY) Blues Society’s weekly jam sessions, The Stella-Vees capture many qualities of the early blues.    The band is known for their use of simple rhythms, unique arrangements, and dynamics.

The Stella-Vees are largely built around the unique vocal/guitar style of “Songsmith” Jason Lockwood (Knoxville, TN). Their exclusive sound is likewise propelled by harmonica ace Mark Hoekstra (Chicago, IL). Mark’s rich performing history dates back to the 1980’s with the phenomenal West Side Heat, and three years of travel with The Legendary Blues Band. Tim Dennison (Louisville, KY) on bass and Steve Parrish (New Orleans, LA) on drums provide the solid runway from which The Stella-Vees lift off.

The Stella-Vees finished first, winning the 2004 and the 2006 Kentuckiana Blues Society’s “Unsigned Blues Band Competition” in Louisville, KY. Competing bands in this highly respected event are judged on original blues material, showmanship, and blues talent. The Stella-Vees played seven major blues festivals in 2007.

In February, 2009 they will travel back to Memphis, for the eighth consecutive year, to host their annual Blues Jam at Mr. Handy's Blues Hall on historic Beale Street. The Jam is a centerpiece attraction for players and blues fans attending the International Blues Challenge, the world’s largest annual gathering of blues musicians.

The Stella-Vees Blues Band’s sixteen song CD, “Come Round Baby,” consisting of eight originals tunes, currently enjoys airplay coast to coast, and in far-flung global blues hotspots, including Poland and Australia.

    • one of the best around period.

    • The Stella Vees are one of my favorite bands! I loved being able to host them at Odie's in Hot Springs a few weeks back. They are one of the smoothest blues bands out there and a bunch of nice cats to boot!

    • You gotta' see these guys live. Over and over. I promise you won't be disappointed. Nice web site too. Keep the blues coming.

    • The Stella Vees deliver real deal blues... simmered in restraint, steeped in tradition... seasoned to perfection.

    • Hey Steve & all you Vees Great job & congrats on the new website. Looks great. Keep up the good work, & we'll see you at a show.

      Rennie

    • Saw these guys at Odie's House of Blues last night. Absolutely incredible. I have never seen so much energy and soul come from a blues band.

      A must see.

    • The Stella Vees have rapidly matured into one of the best bands in the region...

    • Fronted by Jason Lockwood, a true T-Bone Walker/Charlie Christian aficionado on the guitar/vocals, the Stella Vees are known for their yearly daytime jam in Handy Hall at the IBC in Memphis. Lately the Stellas have added a new member, my favorite harp player in this area of the country (cos he's likely the best!)... Mark Hoekstra. Jason is a very smooth vocalist... a truly fine guitarist and front man. Mark's dynamic showmanship and vocals was really a standout...he has played with some notables as 'Big Eyed' Willie Smith (late 'Legendary Blues Band' tours), Steve Arvey, and of course, Johnny Roy & the RubTones!

    • I was introduced to this album by my son in law Rennie Neubecker in Lex.KY..I loved it so much..that he played it several times for me.. My kind of music..the blues...I got on CD Baby and ordered it right away..Looking forward to more of your music...

    • Jason Lockwood of the Stella Vees from Lexington, Kentucky...I never get tired of listening to him play...This cat is THE smoothest player I've seen. Nothing fancy or tricky, no jumping around or trying to do a marathon on the fretboard. Just plain and simple blues guitar. Silk is the word that comes to mind when I think about his playing.
